HTC Announces Smart

HTCSmart_thumbAlthough perhaps just a teeny tiny bit overshadowed by their recent release of the Nexus One, HTC has announced their first Brew handset, called the Smart. Complete with the Sense user interface found on Android and Windows Mobile, a 3 megapixel camera, 2.8” QVGA display, and 3.5mm headphone jack, the Smart is a modest package, but could do well to bring a smartphone-esque experience to those traditionally stuck in features phones due to price. No Wi-Fi, but that should help keep the Smart super-cheap. Worried this will be a sad excuse for a wannabe smartphone? Before you start speculating that this might be AT&T’s upcoming mystery Brew handset, the Smart is slated initially for Asia and Europe in the spring.

LG GW990

lgxye01picture-15

You’ll know this device as the 4.8-inch revolutionary intent on making us fall madly in love with MIDs all over again (or should that be for the first time?). Good thing then that we now know it as the device that bears a thousand Engadget fingerprints. The Moorestown-powered GW990 from LG has finally become official and we have to say it is exactly the huge slab you might imagine it to be. In terms of specs, it comes with 16GB of built in flash memory and 512MB RAM, and 720p output is possible if the 1020 x 480 screen resolution isn’t enough for you. Chunky, sturdy and curved in all the right places, it’s an appealing device even if it suffers from a bit of an identity crisis.

ITG’s xpPhone gets options for larger screen and Windows 7, loses sense of identity

xpphone-new550-30-10-2009

It makes sense to release your mostly-theoretical (so far, anyway) desktop OS-based slider handset with the world’s newest and best version of Windows, but it when your slider handset is dubbed “xpPhone” things become a bit more muddled. But that’s the word from Pocketables, who’s been in touch with ITG and learned that the MID / phone will not only ship with a Windows 7 option, but also be available in 4.3-inch, 4.8-inch and 7-inch screen sizes.

Samsung’s new mobile, the SCH-W920, looks a lot like those old-school “wireless” phones from the eighties with the big antenna, only it doesn’t have an over-sized cradle to rest it on.
